Phayao sits beside Kwan Phayao Lake, 100km east of Chiang Rai. Buses run to Chiang Mai (4 hours), Chiang Rai (2 hours), and Bangkok (12 hours). No airport -- the nearest is Chiang Rai (100km). Motorbike rental (1,500-2,000 THB/month) provides access to Doi Phu Nang National Park and surrounding countryside. The city is walkable along the lakefront. Songthaews serve local routes. The lakefront promenade is the city's social center.
