Lamphun is a small provincial city just 26km south of Chiang Mai, founded as the capital of the Hariphunchai Kingdom in the 9th century — predating Chiang Mai by over 600 years. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai with its sacred golden chedi is one of northern Thailand's most revered pilgrimage sites. Each August the Longan Festival celebrates the province's status as Thailand's finest longan fruit producer with beauty pageants and fruit competitions. Doi Khun Tan National Park to the east features Thailand's longest railway tunnel and forest trails to waterfalls. Getting Around Lamphun
Lamphun is just 25km south of Chiang Mai, connected by frequent songthaews (30 THB, 30-40 minutes) departing from Chiang Mai's Chang Phuak gate. The train line runs through Lamphun with connections to Chiang Mai and Bangkok. No airport -- Chiang Mai (25km) is the nearest. The city is compact and easily walkable, especially around the old city walls. Motorbike rental (2,000-2,500 THB/month) provides access to surrounding temples and mountains.
Ancient Hariphunchai Kingdom
Lamphun was the capital of the Hariphunchai Kingdom (7th-13th centuries), the last Mon kingdom before Lanna conquest. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is one of the most sacred temples in Northern Thailand, featuring a 46-meter golden stupa and ancient relics. The old city walls and moat enclose a charming center of traditional wooden houses and quiet lanes. The Saturday walking street market is smaller and more intimate than Chiang Mai's.
